Geotechnical Engineering Research Institute develops advanced construction technologies for infrastructure related to structural foundations, tunnels, ground reinforcement/improvement, and soil environment as well as researches solutions to social issues that help mitigate natural disasters such as landslides, sink holes and flood damage. It also evaluates convergence and integration technologies to create future markets for new renewable energy sources (including sea wind and geothermal), mechanical and automated construction technologies (including TBM), and technologies for new materials (including biopolymer and high performance girders). Advanced research capabilities are now focused on creating new living spaces and leading in global technology sectors such as underground infrastructure, floating maritime structures, undersea tunnels, extreme cold environments, and lunar environments.
