Introduction

With the increase in population concentration and the advancement of urbanization, a number of issues are arising in the areas of traffic congestion, environmental pollution and energy. As such, prompt policy decisions are needed to address various social and economic issues, such as the operation of urban infrastructures and disaster safety. The KICT Smart Cities Research Center is integrating data and intelligent information technologies to resolve such urban issues. In other words, it aims to develop practical services for citizens through urban planning and management using AI, connecting smart facilities using cloud-based opened IoT (Internet of Things), and integrating big data and location information. The KICT Smart Cities Research Center will establish a smart city ecosystem for legal systems-technologies-infrastructure-civil society systems to make cities more charming and sustainable, while presenting solutions and technological alternatives to general urban issues through data-driven city and ICT convergence research.
