Celebrating the completion of modular houses in Gayang-dong

A research team led by Dr. Lim Seok-ho at the KICT Building and Urban Research Institute developed Korea’s first modular housing that can be built in a short time by assembling LEGO block-like units and celebrated the completion of the first modular houses, named Lipoom, in the Gayang Modular Test Bed in Gayang-dong, Gangseo District, Seoul on December 26, 2017 at 2 p.m.
In modular architecture, more than 70% of housing components, including windows, outer walls, electric wiring and piping, bath, and kitchen, are produced and pre-fabricated in factories, and the so-made unit structures resembling 3D LEGO blocks are finally installed and put together on site.
As a national R&D project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Gayang Test-Bed project was commenced by KICT, SH Corporation, and POSCO A&C in January 2017. The houses will be used for Seoul Metropolitan City’s public rental housing programs for young people who just started their careers. Residents will begin moving in on the 29th. The completion of the Gayang Modular Test Bed demonstrated that KICT’s construction technology is applicable to modular houses with more than five stories. In 2018, KICT, in collaboration with Korea Land and Housing Corporation, will be building the second modular houses for public rental projects in Cheonan City, Chungnam Province, and afterward it will pursue nationwide distribution of modular housing.
