On Friday, March 21, at the 「World Water Day」 ceremony held at Ilsan Kintex, Dr. Kim, Hyeonjun of Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT), was awarded the Dongbaek Order of Civil Merit, while Dr. Chung, Il Moon received the Presidential Citation.
World Water Day was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1992 to raise global awareness of the importance of water and to encourage international efforts to solve water-related issues. Since 1995, South Korea has been hosting government-led ceremonies to commemorate this day.
Dr. Kim, Hyeonjun played a pivotal role in advancing water management technologies by developing the Dynamic Water Resources Assessment Technology (DWAT), which has been pilot-tested in 26 countries. Similarly, Dr. Chung, Il Moon was recognized for his contributions to addressing water welfare blind spots through the construction of the nation's first bypass sand dam and for conducting integrated research on groundwater.
At the ceremony, KICT President Sun Kyu, Park, congratulated the two researchers on their achievements and pledged that KICT would continue its efforts to develop innovative technologies and achieve excellent results in response to the challenges posed by climate change and increasingly complex water management issues.
